About Library

Maulana Azad central library is one of the oldest library and is situated in the heart of Madhya Pradesh State. The building has its own Historical significance, being one of the finest architecture masterpiece of the early 20th century, the building was constructed as a Museum by Sultan Jahan Begum of Bhopal in 1908. Post-Independence, the museum was converted to a library in the year 1955, since then, the library has served the people who are curious to gain Knowledge with a collection of over One Lakh books in many different Languages. The Library has a unique collection of antique and vintage books in Hindi, Urdu English, Sanskrit, and Persian languages. Besides the collection of books, the library has a rare collection of national and international survey reports and case studies of significant importance. This Library is a hub for the students preparing for diverse competitive exams and is actively involved in conducting seminars, interactive sessions where students can interact with IAS, EX- IAS officials and people who have served at higher ranks. At Present the Library has over 10,000 members, the library has one old building of archeological importance which has a seminar Hall and a reading section, apart from this there are two other halls situated in the South-west corner and a playground in the eastern part of the old building, it has a total spread area of 5.33 Acres. Recently the library gets digitalized with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system, all the books are tagged with RFID tags connected with a reader, a wireless device that emit radio waves and receives the signal back from RFID tags. The system provides an easy access to the books, the library members can also issue and return the books at their own. In 2016, an initiative was taken to convert the library premises into a biodiversity rich zone, Under this initiative plantation of the native species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants was done that could help to sustain a variety of animal species and at present it is a home for many species of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and Moths. Another key feature is House- sparrow (Gaurariya) revival programme, under which their population was increased from only a few pairs in 2016 to more than 500 pairs that actively uses the whole library as a nesting ground.
